I have always been haunted by the losses of so many young people that are woven through The Beatles’ mythology. It has seemed to me to be disproportionate to what we consider ‘usual’ for that age group. Sometimes I think the stats are more like a reflection of the war-time loss of young men. Stuart Sutcliffe, Brian Epstein, Mal Evans, Keith Moon, Brian Jones, John Lennon, Michael Cooper, Robert Fraser – all prematurely gone. No conclusions can be drawn but two were shot, others drug-related, some depression, one AIDS – a horrible price to pay for flying close to the sun.
