The starting point for this work was thinking about the opposing forces in Stuart Sutcliffe’s work and life, his sudden premature death and the subsequent mythologising of the story. Like anything related to the Beatles, his story has been poured over and become part of popular culture mythology. His crucial decision to leave the band and pursue the more solitary pursuit of painting is told from many different viewpoints, but ultimately was unresolved because of his early death. Relating some of these concerns to my practice, the idea of constant decision-making and infinite numbers of different paths to be followed became a focus for the project, exploring it in relation to my own continued investigations into the relationship between drawing and sculpture. The work does not make any specific reference to Sutcliffe but deals with more general concerns, particularly this binary relationship shifting back and forth between an external and internal.
